Spanish was my first language and I predominantly spoke Spanish at home and in my community during my childhood in Miami, Fl. I also took formal coursework in Spanish during high school and college. I have received formalized coursework and supervision in cross-cultural assessment with children and adults at all levels of my training. I have also received supervision and clinical experience abroad at the University of Malaga in Spain. I am currently investigating the role of parental acculturation on pediatric neuropsychological measures, as well as the influence of bilingualism and cultural variables on epilepsy surgery outcomes. I am familiar with the scientific literature on Hispanic neuropsychology and tests/norms available in Spanish. I am committed to ensuring that monolingual Spanish speakers and bilinguals have access to neuropsychological services and advanced neuroimaging techniques.

I am bilingual/bicultural, having been raised by my Cuban mother and Peruvian father. Though I am fluent in both Spanish and English, I would not call myself competent in cross-cultural neuropsychological assessment - yet; I'm considering specializing in this area and would like to have access to resources on this topic. Currently, I hold a certificate in neuropsychological assessment from my Ph.D. graduate program. Though I am currently pursuing my licensing hours in a part-time post-doc clinical psychology placement (where I provide psychotherapy in English and Spanish), I hope to eventually pursue specialist training via a neuropsych post doc in the future (once my young children reach grade school age). In the meantime, I'm seeking resources, societies/organizations, relevant literature, and opportunities for CE classes or seminars in cross-cultural neuropsychology.

I learned Spanish in Mexico 20 years ago and have used it professionally and socially ever since. I have taken graduate level courses in Spanish at Universidad de las Americas in Mexico. With a Master's degree in Linguistics I am a conscientious language learner and observer. I often read or ask questions in front of a native speaker to receive feedback. I have been told I have little or no accent. Through reading and cultural exchanges, I have acquired a good deal of knowledge about many historical, political and social issues that affect Central and South America as well as Latinos in the United States. This has informed therapeutic interventions as well as clinical evaluations. I have participated in the development and publication of several Spanish measures, including consensus based adaptations of test measures into Spanish. More recently, given a change in patient population from mono-lingual to bi-lingual, I have been investigating the effects of bilingualism on cognition.

I am currently in a postdoctoral fellowship in Palliative Care with a minor in neuropsychological testing. I conduct neuropsychological testing in English to Hispanic/Latino veterans (English speaking) at the VA in San Antonio, TX. Prior to obtaining my doctorate, I worked in the field of Gerontology, specifically Latino Aging. My doctoral training included both extensive coursework with a multicultural emphasis. My clinical training included work on Spanish speaking therapy teams with live supervision and using reflecting teams. Most of my practicum sites in San Antonio, TX included therapy with Spanish speaking populations.

I've been bilingual (Spanish-English) for most of my life as I was born in El Salvador and immigrated to the US when I was 10. Thus I am able to speak, understand and write both languages well. I have always been interested in multicultural issues in psychology including neuropsychological evaluation of Spanish speaking individuals. I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Marcel Ponton and have learned about conducting clinical interviews as well as providing neuropsychological assessments in Spanish to Spanish speaking individuals.

I'm fluent in English and Spanish. I lived in Latin America for 3-1/2 years and was totally immersed in various cultures (Dominican Republic, most South American countries). Also, I grew up in the Central Coast area of California and interacted constantly with migrant farmworkers (mostly from Mexico) and Mexican-Americans. During the course of my graduate studies (both at masters level as well as Ph.D.), I worked with Spanish language speakers providing psychotherapy. As part of my Ph.D. program, I sought out and received formal training in psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessments utilizing Spanish language materials. Although I have formal training and conducted some psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessments in Spanish, I'd like to gain more experience and expertise in the area.

I received bilingual training in my graduate studies at the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, where I lived and studied for four years. In Puerto Rico I conducted psychotherapy and psychological assessment with monolingual Hispanic children and adults. I received neuropsychological training in the US and Canada where, as the only Spanish speaker, I provided assessment services for Spanish speaking clientele. I have been successful in convincing the institutions I have worked at to acquire culturally adequate testing materials and norms. I have also guest lectured for courses on cross-cultural therapy and assessment with Hispanics to undergraduate and graduate students. I was born in Mexico, and have lived in Chile.
