HNS 2019 Conference Welcome from the President and Conference Co-Chairs
On behalf of the Hispanic Neuropsychological Society (HNS) and the HNS 2019 Conference Task Force, bienvenidos to the third biannual HNS conference in New York City!
HNS is an independent non-profit scientific and professional membership organization dedicated to the advancement of science, evidence-based practice, education/training, and policies related to cultural neuropsychology within Latinx, Spanish-speaking, and other culturally/linguistically diverse populations across the lifespan.
HNS is thrilled to be partnering with the International Neuropsychological Society (INS) this year to conjoin our conferences. As part of this partnership, HNS will be co-sponsoring the inaugural meeting of the new INS Special Interest Group (SIG) on Cultural Neuropsychology (look for the orange ribbons) and co-hosting the SLC/HNS/ANST Student Social Event. In addition, HNS is grateful to INS for graciously hosting the HNS Business Meeting and inaugural Award Ceremony during INS and the HNS Conference at the conclusion of INS programming on Saturday (February 23rd), as well as partnering with us to provide APA-approved CE credits.
The theme of this year’s HNS program is “Cultural Neuropsychology in Action!” This theme builds upon the HNS 2017 Conference, which hosted the 10-year anniversary of the Cultural Neuropsychology Summit, and will focus on cultural neuropsychology research in core areas of great importance to both scientists and clinicians, including bilingualism and normative data. Our invited speakers and panelists represent leaders at the cutting edge of research in these areas, and our plenary sessions will be illuminating, provocative, and offer fertile ground for lively intellectual debate.
As part of HNS’s key strategic initiative to advance the science of cultural neuropsychology, we are excited to announce HNS’ inaugural Research Hour at the conclusion of the conference plenary sessions. During this time, we will launch our first-ever research poster session and a brief presentation on the Spanish language version of the NIH Toolbox will be provided while conference attendees enjoy light hors d’oeuvres. There will be over 70 poster presentations highlighting the latest developments in cultural neuropsychology research. Following the conference, please visit our HNS website, listserv, and/or social media (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) as we will be announcing our inaugural poster awards for excellence in trainee research and special topics!
In the spirit of familismo, we also cordially invite you to celebrate and support all of HNS’ hard work over the last two years, and join us Friday (Feb. 22nd) for our HNS Social Event at Gonzalez & Gonzalez. The evening will include dinner, bottomless margaritas and sangrias, live salsa music, dancing, and a raffle. This will be the best party in town on Friday night so please join us!
This year’s HNS conference is possible due to the tremendous support of INS and our sponsors. Our sincere gratitude to INS’ Drs. Gordon Chelune and Michael Kirkwood, the Board of Governors, Ms. Chantal Marks, and Ms. Stephanie Card for being amazing conference partners. We are grateful for our individual sponsors, who made this event possible!
Big thanks also goes out to our local academic sponsors, Fordham University and Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and national sponsors, including
University of Florida/College of Public Health and Health Professionals/Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, Pearson Education, Inc., and Psychological Assessment Resources, Inc. (PAR). We urge you to learn about all of these wonderful institutions and organizations, and please thank them for their magnificent support.
Last but not least, muchísimas gracias to our incredible 2019 Conference Task Force and the multitude of volunteers, who have made this conference a reality. Thanks to all of their tireless efforts, the 2019 HNS Conference will be our biggest and best conference yet!
In closing, we hope you increase your knowledge, have a wonderful time, and meet/network with new friends and old. For details on all HNS 2019 conference events, please visit www.hnps.org.
